The result of the FRAME workshop aimed at 6-9 years old is a collective short-film, composed from a compilation of animated sequences created by the students participating. The anchor point for developing the film was the addition of each student to the phrase “I feel free when….” Each student completed the phrase and then visualized it with the help of our facilitators, by using either traditional frame-by-frame animation, cut-out stop motion animation or a combination of the two.

The result of this FRAME workshop, aimed at 6-9 years old is a collective short-film, compiled from 3 separate animated stories, developed by students in 3 teams. All the sequences derived from the same concept – The students were asked to bring the workshop an object linked with a memory they have. Then, the children worked in teams to come up with an animated scene or interaction between these objects, creating through this process a new, shared memory between them. The result is a playful, unexpected and surreal interaction between elements and characters that would normally not be associated with each other.

The Memory of Gifts
By Istituto Comprensivo “Via Eva Gioia” – Gioia del Colle (BA)
“The Memory of Gifts” invited 9–11-year-old students to explore the emotional world connected to meaningful gifts they had received. After watching and discussing a selection of animated shorts, each child created a small illustrated box containing their personal story, which was then transformed into a cut-out animation scene. The group built sets, objects and titles, working together in stop motion to bring the collective film to life. The atmosphere was warm and reflective, with students sharing memories openly and supporting one another throughout the process. Teachers observed how the workshop encouraged deep concentration, empathy and a poetic sense of storytelling.

I Remember When
Istituto Comprensivo “Via Firenze-Forlani” – Conversano (BA)
“I Remember When…” introduced primary school students to cut-out animation through a playful and structured approach. After exploring the basics of animated cinema, each child created an articulated paper character and contributed to a collective story starting from the prompt “I remember when…”. The group built backgrounds, characters and props, animating them frame by frame and recording their own voice-over to enrich the final short film. The atmosphere was collaborative and imaginative, with students listening to one another and weaving fragments of memory into a shared narrative. Teachers noted how the workshop strengthened focus, cooperation and the joy of seeing ideas take shape on screen.

The Memory of Dreams
Istituto Comprensivo “Via Eva Gioia” – Sammichele di Bari (BA)
The workshop “The Memory of Dreams” engaged a group of 10–11-year-old students in a creative journey inspired by their own dreams. After warming up with storytelling games and a selection of animated shorts, each child wrote a personal dream-based story and transformed it into a cut-out animation scene. The group worked collaboratively in stop motion, creating characters, sets, narration and sound effects during the session. The atmosphere was warm and imaginative, with the students showing deep curiosity and a strong sense of teamwork. Teachers noted how confidently the children shared their inner worlds and how proudly they contributed to the collective animated film.

3 O’Clock Session
by 170 secondary school students and teachers from nine schools across Espinho, Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, S. João da Madeira, Santa Maria da Feira and Ovar
Created during the 2025 Artistic Animation Workshop and Artistic Residency at CINANIMA. Developed under the theme of Memory and structured in three phases: teacher training, in-school mentorship, and a six-day artistic residency, the workshop invited participants to both watch and make cinema. Guided by professional animation mentors, students explored personal and collective memories, transforming them into a shared visual narrative.
This film is dedicated to the memory of the iconic cinemas of our cities. Cinema S. Pedro, Espinho, demolished to make way for a residential building. Cine-Teatro Imperador, S. João da Madeira, after extensive and transformative works, is now Casa da Criatividade, without a cinema. Cinema Trindade, Porto, survives with a small auditorium after being stripped of its terrace with open-air cinema and esplanade, to make way for a bingo hall and a hotel.
